A vector portrait in conversation with Joana Choumali's embroidered photographs. The brief was to borrow the feel of stitch without pretending the file is cloth.
Dashed lines stand in for thread, so the texture and patience of her work show up in a digital medium.
My Contributions
Research: Studied Choumali's portfolio, her themes, and how stitch sits on a photograph.
Ideation: Tested how far a dash, a contour, and a colour field could go before the homage turned into costume.
Illustration: Built the portrait in vector, using dashed paths to mimic embroidery and keep the edges precise.
Refinement: Adjusted density and colour so the stitches read as texture, not noise.
Outcome: A digital portrait that carries some of her method without copying a single piece.
Design Notes
The project sits between embroidery and illustration. Dashed lines simulate stitches and try to keep some of the emotional weight of her embroidered surfaces.
Getting it right meant staying close to her voice: themes, methods, and the decision not to smooth everything out. Vector work can be cold; here it had to stay human.
