Project Overview
Voices of Canada is a limited edition stamp series celebrating influential Canadian women through digital illustration. Posterized portraits of Mary Ann Shadd, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Kenojuak Ashevak, and Doris Anderson aim to fill a representation gap in Canada's philatelic history.
My Contributions
Digital Illustration: Created the digital portraits, capturing each woman in bold, posterized color.
Historical Research: Researched the lives and legacies of all four subjects to represent them accurately and respectfully.
Color Selection: Chose a palette that draws the eye and suits the story and spirit of each subject.
Series Conceptualization: Helped conceptualize the series to highlight diversity in Canada's philatelic history.
Design Strategy: Developed a simple, bold design approach that invites conversation about Canada's diverse heritage.
Design Notes
The series uses vibrant color and a posterized style to grab attention and celebrate each woman's achievements in a contemporary frame. The focus on women of color and Indigenous figures addresses their underrepresentation on Canadian stamps, spotlighting pioneers in journalism, activism, art, and the women's rights movement.
Complementary backgrounds support the portraits without competing with them, and a subtle pattern adds texture to each stamp. The result honors these women's stories and connects past achievements with present-day recognition.
